Tea Tuesday: Bluebird Tea Co.

Hello to you all and welcome once again to a brand new weekly post, where I will be discussing the wonderful drink us Brits just can't seem to get enough of.

Disclaimer: I have not been asked to promote Bluebird Tea Co., I just wanted to spread the Bluebird love

This week I'm kicking things off by talking about my favourite tea shop of all time. Originally set up by co-founders Krisi and Mike (who got married recently, congratulations!), Bluebird Tea Co. is at the forefront of UK Tea Mixology and stores are currently open in Brighton and Tunbridge Wells, and one is opening soon in Bristol. Fear not, readers in other countries! They have a fantastic website, and they ship to the world, but more on that later.

What makes Bluebird Tea Co. so unique is their brilliant flavour combinations using all types of tea: rooibos, green, black, pu'erh, white - you name it, they have a blend using it. Not only this, but the teas are exactly what's said on the tin: blends include Maple Bacon Pancakes, Mojitea, and Birthday Cake. Don't ask me how they make a tea that tastes like birthday cake but they do, and they do it well.

But let's not get carried away with the "exotic" flavours of teas. 'Great British Cuppa' is a mind-bogglingly good blend of Assam, Ceylon, and Chinese Yunnan teas culminating in something which rivals even the best cup of PG Tips, whereas 'Chinese Treasures' is a green tea blend which will leave you never turning back to the box of Twinings.

Or maybe you're ahead of me and already on the matcha bandwagon, in which case Bluebird can offer you flavoured and decaf matchas, as well as the accessories to help you make the perfect cup. You can also attend a Matcha Mixology Masterclass or buy matcha infused honey. Bluebird Tea Co. have truly thought of everything.

It's not just matcha fans that get all the fun. Bluebird also run a regular Tea Mixology class at their Brighton HQ, which makes a perfect gift (she hints subtly to friends possibly reading this post), and have many gift boxes/hampers and all the tea accessories you could possibly want. It's amazing really, when you consider that they only started out in Spring 2014.

If you're intrigued, I implore you to go check out their website and also their Instagram feed, and of course order some tea! Like I said, they ship internationally and all orders include free samples of tea. Plus you can choose from 5 sizes ranging from a small sample pouch (about 10 cups) to a 150g tin/pouch (approx. 50 cups). Some teas also come in luxury loose leaf tea bags, which are biodegradable and excellent!

If you can, I'd also recommend dropping into one of their stores. I can't walk past the one in Brighton without trying both of the teas they usually have to sample and also looking lovingly towards the walls lined with their colourful tins. You can ask to smell any of the teas and the staff are always willing to help with their astonishing expertise. Overall, it's a great experience.

My Top 3 Bluebird Teas

1. Nearly Nirvana: This is a white tea blended with jasmine and white tea. Drinking it is definitely a spiritual experience.

2. Rhubarb and Custard: My favourite childhood sweet in tea form! This is a rooibos tea blend with actual pieces of rhubarb in it, and makes a great sweet treat. I think it's also my favourite smelling tea ever.

3. Christmas Cake: Christmas is long gone but I can't stop drinking this tea. It's black tea blended with, amongst other things, vanilla, almond, cinnamon, and cloves. It also contains actual spruce needles and tiny snowflake sweets, which is why in my opinion, it's the tea that best gives you an idea of Bluebird, because it shows their creativity and inventiveness.
